Various levels of government offer programs to help you with your home & energy needs. Here's an outline of the major programs and links to more information.

HRTC - Home Renovation Tax Credit

The HRTC is a new Federal tax credit giving you back a 15% refund on any lasting major home renovations. Minimum project cost must be $1000, and the maximum refund you can get is up to 15% of $10,000. Effective only through Jan. 27, 2009 to Feb. 1, 2010!!!

EcoEnergy Retrofit

Natural Resources Canada offers grants up to $5000 for energy-efficiency renovations in any home across Canada! As well, the Ontario government matches that $5000 with the same conditions. So it's possible to get a grant up to $10000! Practically speaking, you end up picking and choosing individual options.

Through this program you can also get a $150 rebate towards a home energy audit (which typically cost roughly $300). An energy audit is required before proceeding with any energy-efficiency programs.

GST/HST Credit for New Homes, Substantial Renovation or Major Additions

This is a Federal tax rebate seperate from the HRTC and EcoEnergy Retrofit. For a homeowner, it can be used for a major addition.

Ontario Solar Energy Systems Rebate

Seperate from the EcoEnergy Retrofit, this program returns you the Retail Sales Tax on any solar energy system installed in Ontario. Current deadline is January 1, 2010.

Cool Savings Rebate

Through Toronto Hydro and the Ontario Power Authority there are possible rebates up to $550 for upgrades towards your home heating and cooling system. The program only applies to homes with a Central Air Conditioning system already installed.

CMHC Programs

The Canadian Mortgage & Housing Corporation has various financial assistance home repair programs for seniors, disabled, low-income housing, etc.
